Colorbond® vs Zincalume®: Which Metal Roofing Suits Your Melbourne Home?

Renewable Energy and Construction Corporation · Published August 2026

Back to all guides

Metal roofing dominates new roofs and re-roofs across Melbourne and Victoria, and almost every quote comes down to a choice between two BlueScope steel products: Colorbond® and Zincalume®. Here's what actually separates them.

They start from the same base steel

Both are coated structural steel made by BlueScope. Zincalume® is coated in a zinc/aluminium alloy, giving it a distinctive silver, slightly reflective finish. Colorbond® starts from a similar metallic-coated steel base, then adds a baked-on paint finish in a wide range of standard colours.

Where Zincalume® tends to make sense

Zincalume®'s alloy coating gives it strong general corrosion resistance and it's typically the more cost-effective of the two, which is why it's common on sheds, garages, rural buildings and re-roofs where a silver finish suits the property. It doesn't come in colours, so it's less about matching a streetscape or a heritage overlay and more about a straightforward, durable roof.

Where Colorbond® tends to make sense

For most residential re-roofs and new builds in established Melbourne suburbs, Colorbond® is the more common choice — the colour range makes it far easier to match council heritage overlays, estate covenants, render or brick tones, and neighbouring rooflines. It carries the same underlying steel durability as Zincalume®, with the added paint system on top.

Environment matters more than either product's marketing. BlueScope publishes environmental/corrosion categories that vary by proximity to the coast, industrial areas and other exposure factors, and these affect which specific product and warranty apply to your site. Don't assume — this is exactly the kind of thing to confirm against current BlueScope technical guidelines or with your roofing engineer before locking in a product.

Cost and aesthetics, in general terms

As a rough rule, Zincalume® is usually the lower-cost option and Colorbond® carries a premium for the colour coating — but the real cost driver on most jobs is roof complexity, access and the condition of what's underneath, not the sheet product itself. Get a fixed quote against your actual roof rather than pricing the product in isolation.

Why we treat this as an engineering decision, not just a sales one

We assess the product choice alongside the structural and drainage design, not after it — pitch, fixing method, penetrations (including solar, if that's part of the plan) and the specific corrosion category for your site all affect what we'd actually recommend, and that's a conversation we have as your design and construction team, not a separate quote from a separate supplier.
